JUSTICE AT LAST: REST IN POWER SHEILA ADHIAMBO LUMUMBA

Billington Wambui Mwathi on December 19th 2023 was handed a sentence of 30 years by the Nyeri High Court. This falls tragically short of the justice Sheila deserves and the severity of the crime committed.
Sheila’s murder on April 17, 2022, was not just an act of violence against an individual but an attack on the dignity and safety of the LGBTQ+ community. The leniency shown in this sentence sends a concerning message about the value placed on the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals in our society.
While we respect the judicial process, we cannot help but feel that this sentence does not adequately reflect the gravity of Mwathi’s actions or the irreparable loss experienced by Sheila’s family and the community. Here is our statement together with NGLHRC and galck+
